3 Ways to Keep Your Kids Busy While Sheltering-in-Place

COVID-19 has dramatically changed life for our families. Kids are facing challenges with missing their friends from school and being bored and parents or guardians are either exhausted from their added role as ‘substitute teacher’ or depleted of ideas for keeping kiddos off Youtube, TikTok, and Netflix. One of the pivotal reasons kids attend school is to get them up and moving around with mandatory P.E. and/or active time. We don’t need to let this be a ‘break’ from that activity and we shouldn’t allow their bodies to succumb to the sedentary state for too long! It’s essential to instill a healthy, active lifestyle even if you don’t have a Physical Education degree or a whistle around your neck.

Below are some ways we can keep our kids busy while sheltering-in-place

1. House Work

I know, I know – what kid loves to do chores? None in my household, but this is a great way to kill two birds with one stone. Thirty minutes a day, contributing towards picking up around the house, mowing the lawn, doing laundry, or even sweeping/mopping can not only break up the monotony but can also help them burn off some of that boundless energy. If they’re on the younger side, vacuuming, dusting baseboards and window sills, and washing the car are all good ways to keep ‘em moving! We’ve even seen some parents use chores as a way for their kids to “unlock” the new Wi-Fi password for the day!

2. Let EVOLVE-20 ‘take over recess’!

Burn off some energy and see your friends with EVOLVE-20! We have kids classes Monday - Thursday and even Take Over Recess twice a week (Click here for Schedule) and videos on Facebook with Coach Mark (and assistant coach Donovan). Learn moves you can practice together and stay connected with other Evolve families and your coaches.

3. Promote calmness by learning yoga together

Youtube has many yoga videos, specifically for kids and teens. I love doing yoga first thing in the morning and right before bed, and now and then my three-year-old son will join in on the stretching with me. Yoga is a great way to enhance their strength, coordination, and flexibility. Furthermore, it promotes calmness and relaxation – a definite must in today’s current state of affairs.

We hope that some of these tips and suggestions help keep your children active and entertained. Staying active activates our immune systems in a significant way. With the pandemic we’re facing, any positive contribution is better than none.
Near or far, in person or not – we want to remind you that we are always here for you and your families. The solidarity we have as a community and an academy will thrive even amidst this shelter-in-place command, and we’ll continue to serve you and we’re here to keep you accountable!
