Frequently asked questions
Class Information
Do I need experience to join classes?
No experience is needed for most of our classes! Beginners are welcome in our general Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and fitness classes. However, experience is required for our Adults Jiu Jitsu Competition Class and Muay Thai Level 2. If you’re unsure which class is right for you, feel free to reach out—we’re happy to assist!
Do I need to be in shape before I start training?
No, you don’t need to be in shape to start training in either Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai. Both martial arts are designed to build your fitness, strength, and endurance as you go. Whether you’re a complete beginner or have some athletic background, our classes cater to all levels.
For Jiu Jitsu, the focus is more on technique, leverage, and strategy, so you don’t need to be in peak physical condition to begin. You’ll gradually build strength, flexibility, and stamina over time.
For Muay Thai, while it may seem more physically demanding, beginners are always encouraged to start at their own pace. You’ll improve your cardio, coordination, and conditioning as you train, with our coaches guiding you through the fundamentals.
Both disciplines are great ways to get in shape while learning valuable self-defense skills! The key is consistency, so you’ll improve your fitness level through regular training.
Can I train if I’m injured?
Yes, you can train with certain injuries, but it’s important to be cautious. Our coaches can help modify your training to work around injuries, focusing on areas like technique or movement while avoiding activities that could make the injury worse. However, it’s important to get clearance from your doctor before resuming any physical activity. Be sure to discuss any injuries with your coach beforehand to create a safe, tailored plan.
What should I bring to my first class?
Jiu Jitsu: No Gi? No problem! We provide loaner Gis for new students to ensure you’re ready to hit the mats. If you’d like your own, we sell high-quality Gis right here at the academy. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes (like a rash guard or athletic wear) underneath the Gi for the best training experience.
Muay Thai: Don’t have shin guards or gloves yet? We’ve got you covered with loaner gear for your first class. We also offer a range of premium gear for purchase at the academy. Be sure to wear comfortable athletic clothes to ensure you can move freely and get the most out of your training.
Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial, so be sure to bring one along.
We also recommend wearing easy-to-put-on-and-take-off shoes to make transitions on and off the mats more convenient.
What gear do I need once I’m a member ?
Muay Thai:
Evolve Training Shirt: Lightweight and breathable for optimal movement.
Evolve Muay Thai Shorts: Designed for flexibility and range of motion.
Shin Guards: Essential for protection during kicks and drills.
Gloves: For striking and pad work, ensuring hand and wrist safety.
Jiu Jitsu:
Patched Gi: The traditional uniform for training, providing durability and grip. Our Gis include Evolve + SixBlades patches (2 on the front chest, 2 on the back). However, if your Gi does not come with these patches, they will need to be purchased and stitched at your expense. Patches are available for purchase at the front desk.
Belt: Worn to indicate rank and secure your Gi.
Rashguard: Recommended under your Gi for comfort and hygiene, reducing skin friction.
For safety and comfort during training, hair must be tied back in a ponytail, bun, or braided for both Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. This helps keep hair out of the way, reducing distractions and minimizing the risk of accidental pulling or interference during class.
Do you offer kids’ classes?
Evolve Training Center offers a variety of kids’ classes, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and Muay Thai, designed to help children build physical fitness, confidence, and discipline in a fun and safe environment. Our classes are suitable for different age groups and skill levels, with coaches focused on teaching proper techniques, self-defense skills, and teamwork.
Kids will learn important life skills like respect, focus, and perseverance while also improving their coordination and fitness. Whether your child is new to martial arts or looking to advance their skills, we provide a welcoming space for them to thrive.

Attendance (How often should my child attend?)
The more time you put into training, the more progress you’ll see. Consistent attendance is key to improving your skills and achieving your goals, whether you’re training for fitness, self-defense, or competition. While even a couple of classes a week can yield results, those who attend more regularly tend to see faster improvement in technique, strength, and overall performance. Remember, consistency is the foundation of growth in martial arts!
If my child doesn’t like the class in the first month, should they quit?
If your child doesn’t enjoy the class in the first month, it’s important to remember that learning martial arts involves a learning curve. Martial arts is a long-term journey that teaches essential life skills like perseverance, discipline, and resilience. While the first few weeks can be challenging, staying committed helps children develop these valuable traits, which will benefit them both on and off the mats.
Encouraging your child to continue will help them learn to overcome challenges and build confidence through consistent effort. For more insights, check out this excellent blog on the topic here.
Belts & Promotions
How do belt and rank promotions work in Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai, and how often are students evaluated?
Jiu Jitsu
Kids: Promotions are based on attendance, attitude, participation, and skill demonstration. Consistent practice and improvement, along with positive engagement, are key factors. Competing is encouraged but not required.
Adults: Promotions are earned through consistent practice, technique mastery, and readiness. Evaluations focus on skill application in live training. Competition experience may be considered but is not mandatory.
Muay Thai
Kids: Promotions follow a structured ranking system based on consistent practice, attitude, and skill demonstration. Evaluations include mastering foundational techniques and applying them in both controlled and live scenarios. Competing is encouraged but not required.
Adults: Promotions are earned through consistent practice, technique mastery, and application in live training or sparring. Like in kids’ rankings, competition experience may be considered but is not required.
For more details on specific rank requirements, consult your coach.
What is the typical timeline and criteria for promotions?
Promotions in both Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai depend on individual progress, regular attendance, and demonstrated skill. While Jiu Jitsu adults have set testing intervals, both disciplines prioritize consistent improvement and readiness for advancement.
Do you hold promotion ceremonies?
Yes, we hold promotion ceremonies to celebrate our students’ hard work and progress! These events allow family and friends to join in supporting their achievements as they advance to the next level. Instructors recognize each student’s dedication and accomplishments, making it a meaningful celebration for our entire community.
